Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The work is physically demanding and repetitive: you'll spend hours bent over cars in all weather, breathing chemical fumes, and risking hand and wrist injuries from power tools. Pay caps out quickly without moving into management. Demand fluctuates with the economy and used car market. Customer satisfaction pressure is high because people scrutinise their car's finish closely.
Where the jobs are
Jobs concentrate in capital city metro areas where car dealerships, service centres, and specialist detailing shops cluster. Regional areas have fewer positions and typically lower pay. Detailing work is tied to population density and vehicle sales activity.
