Bank Officer
A bank officer processes customer transactions, manages accounts, and provides frontline banking services in a retail or branch banking environment.
What this job is
Bank tellers process deposits, withdrawals, and transfers for customers at a branch counter. They handle cash accurately, check identification, and follow strict security and compliance procedures. Beyond basic transactions, tellers often answer account questions, direct customers to other services, and flag unusual activity. The work is detail-focused and requires a calm, professional manner even during busy periods.

Day-to-day
A typical day starts with balancing the cash drawer before the branch opens. Through the day, a teller serves a queue of customers, processing a mix of cash deposits, cheque handling, bill payments, and account enquiries. Between customers, there is paperwork, system updates, and checks to complete. At close of business, the drawer is balanced again and any discrepancies are investigated. Shifts are generally structured around branch opening hours, which may include Saturdays.
Who does this now
About 43,900 people worked in this occupation across Australia at the 2021 Census.
Is it steady
Branch numbers are falling in most banks as digital banking grows. Tellers who stay tend to move toward advisory conversations.
What this role asks for
Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3)

Requirements
The standard entry requirement is completion of Year 12 (JSA Occupation Profile). No formal tertiary qualification is required for most teller roles. Banks typically provide on-the-job training covering their own systems, cash handling procedures, and compliance obligations. If you are considering building on this role toward financial planning or lending work, a Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking or a Diploma of Financial Planning may be relevant next steps. The honest hard part
The real challenge in this role is not the transactions themselves but the pressure that comes with them. Cash handling errors can count against your performance record at some employers, so accuracy under time pressure matters every single day. Customer-facing work also means managing difficult interactions, including people who are stressed about their finances. Beyond the day-to-day, the structural shift toward digital banking means branch-based roles have been contracting across Australia. Anyone considering this as a long-term career path should think about how the skills gained, such as compliance awareness, customer service, and financial product knowledge, could transfer into adjacent roles in the sector.
Where the jobs are
Bank branches operate across metropolitan, regional, and rural areas, though branch numbers have been declining in smaller towns as digital banking grows. The largest concentrations of roles are likely in major cities where branch networks remain active.
