Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The pay stays low because you're doing routine shelf-stocking and till work, not dispensing or advising like a pharmacist. You'll hit a ceiling quickly without moving into pharmacy technician training or management. Retail hours mean Saturdays, school holidays, and sometimes early starts. Customer complaints about health issues you can't solve get emotionally draining.
Where the jobs are
Regional and rural areas have fewer positions. Reality is that suburban and regional towns usually have only 1-3 pharmacies compared to dozens in a city. Remote work is not an option.
