Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll spend a lot of time on repetitive database searches and answering the same questions over and over. FOI deadlines are strict and non-negotiable, so you carry real legal responsibility if timelines slip. The work is detail-heavy with little room for error, and you're often stuck between frustrated members of the public and departments that are slow to respond.

Where the jobs are

In practice, jobs concentrate in capital city government offices and local council headquarters. Regional areas have fewer positions. Remote work is uncommon because the role requires access to secure internal systems and sometimes face-to-face public contact.
