Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Entry-level helpdesk and support roles don't pay much, and pushing further requires certifications (Cisco, Microsoft, CompTIA) that cost time and money. You're also on-call for outages and system failures: expect after-hours work, weekend emergencies, and the stress of keeping other people's work running.
Where the jobs are
Regional Australia has fewer opportunities. Jobs concentrate where large organisations have big IT departments: banks, insurance, government agencies, universities. Some remote work exists but most roles need you onsite for hardware fixes and network troubleshooting.
