The two sentences that almost never meet: AI and job cuts in ASX 200 annual reports

We read the 2026 annual reports of 155 ASX 200 companies. Twenty-one reported cutting staff or planning to, through redundancies, fewer roles or work moved offshore. Seventeen of those also told shareholders AI was making, or would make, the business more efficient or doing customer work. Only two, Telstra Group and WiseTech Global, said the two were connected.

That doesn't mean AI caused the cuts. It means the companies didn't say either way. Every line is quoted word for word, with the page.

Read to 5 November 2026.

How we read the reports

Which companies and documents

The companies are the S&P/ASX 200 as at 23 October 2026, from State Street SPDR S&P/ASX 200 ETF (STW) daily holdings, as of 23 October 2026; legal names from the ASX listed companies directory, fetched 25 October 2026. A company that joined or left the index after that date stays as listed until the next full update.

For each company we read its 2026 annual report, its full-year results presentation and results-call transcript, and its AGM chair and chief executive addresses, as lodged with the ASX. When the same fact is in several, we show the quote from the annual report first, then the results presentation, the transcript and the AGM address. Only PDF documents are read. A company is counted in the figures only when its 2026 annual report has been read.

What each column means

In the table, Talks up AI efficiency is Yes when a company tied AI to efficiency, plainly or as one lever or an aim, or gave a number for AI doing customer or operations work. Cut staff is Yes when it disclosed a workforce reduction. Connected them is Yes when it connected AI to that reduction. The CSV holds all six codes:

Mentions AI
Yes when the documents use the terms below at least once, not counting job titles and team names.
Ties AI to efficiency
Plain: a sentence where the company says AI has made, or is making, it more efficient or productive, or cheaper to run. Hedged: AI named as one of several ways to do that, or as an aim, a priority or an expected benefit.
Number for AI doing customer or operations work
A number the company gives for AI doing customer service or operations work, such as a share of enquiries, customers served or claims handled.
Number of people trained in or using AI
A number of people trained in, or using, AI tools.
Workforce reduction in the same period
A redundancy cost, a fall in full-time equivalent staff, a smaller headcount, or work moved offshore, disclosed for the same reporting period.
Connects AI to the workforce reduction
Yes only where the company's own sentence, or two sentences next to each other in one paragraph, say that workforce change came in whole or in part from AI.

The words we count as a mention of AI

  • Counted: \bAI\b (case-sensitive), \bartificial intelligence\b and \bGen ?AI\b (both case-insensitive).
  • Not counted when a job title is within 30 characters in the same sentence: before it, Chief, Head, Director, Executive, General Manager, Officer, Lead, Leader, Manager; after it, Officer, Director, Lead, Leader, Manager.
  • Not counted when a unit name follows it directly: Academy, Centre, Center, Lab, Labs, Hub, Council, Committee, Institute, Office, Team, Guild, Studio, Factory.

Companies outside the base

Every headline figure is out of 155 ASX 200 companies whose FY26 reports we read in full. These companies reported a 2026 financial year but sit outside that base, for the reason given beside each:

  • Amcor AMC. Text could not be read. We could not read the text of its Annual Report.

  • Treasury Wine Estates TWE. Still being checked. We could not yet confirm its workforce reduction figure from the company's own words.

  • Life360 Inc. 360. Text could not be read. We could not read the text of its 2025 Annual Report to Security Holders.

How the codes were made

An AI model (Anthropic's Claude) proposed each code and quote. A program then checked that every quote appears word for word in the company's document, and rejected any that did not. Every statement behind the headline figures was then read against its page, and every pairing in the comparison above was read by our founder before publishing.

We did not find it in the documents listed. It does not mean the company has not done it.

A company that names automation, but not AI, is not counted as connecting AI to a workforce change.

We report what each company said in these documents, not why anything happened.

Coding by Changing Careers from each company's own annual report, results documents and AGM addresses, as lodged with the ASX. Quotes are the companies' words.
